HILLSDALE

Hillsdale (Garfield) is between Panguitch and Hatch near the junction of US-89 and U-12. There are two sources listed for the name. (1) It was named for the hills sourrounding the community. (2) It was named for Joel Hills Johnson, an early settler. The second source is preferred. The community was settled in 1871 under the leadership of George Deliverance Wilson. Wilson and Johnson established a sawmill in that same year.
